The regional cuisine of Abruzzo is known for its exquisite dishes. On the coast you eat delicious fish, but the countryside is the basis for the daily menu: pasta, vegetables, meat and cheese.
Abruzzo is known as the ‘breadbasket of Italy’ because of its large wheat production. The wheat is used to make different kinds of farmhouse breads, but also for the delicious pasta. Rustichella d’Abruzzo is one of the most famous and located in Pianella.
Apart from the delicious tomatoes, you can also get a lot of fresh vegetables directly from the farmer. The meat dishes of the region keep on delighting me; I am thinking of arrosticini (lamb skewer), salsicce, agnello al forno, vitello al limone, pecora alla brace, ….
Pecorino is the most common cheese in Abruzzo. It is a hard sheep’s cheese that you can buy in many variations, the flavors vary depending on the maturing period from forty days to two years.
Before you enter our street, you will see a large welcome sign on the road “Pianella, città dell’olio”. Pianella is known for its very high quality olive oil. Every year we buy olive oil from the local olive oil farmers, delicious green gold.
I have still not yet mentioned Italian wines. The red montepulciano d’abruzzo is produced by our neighbour Chiarieri, among others. We live in the Contrada Granaro, and its red Granaro is delicious to drink in the evening on the patio overlooking his vineyard.
For me, the white Pecorino is an absolute must if you like white wine. In the region of Pianella there are numerous winegrowers who produce tasty red and white wine and let’s not forget the sparkling prosecco. It’s definitely worth to come to our Casa Vita Nuova for a visit
